CCHS battles heat, Bainville

September 15, 2017

The Carter County High School Bulldogs traveled to Bainville for a six-man football game last Saturday. Blue jumped out to an early lead and made a few good stops on defense. Caleb Fix scored three times in the first quarter on runs of 8, 43, and 34 yards. Bainville, though, was able to score two times themselves, and the score at the end of the first quarter was CCHS 20, Bainville 14.

In the second quarter, the heat started to take its toll on the Bulldogs. Junior back Caleb Fix had to come out of the game. He missed most of the second and third quarters. Senior Cameron Wolenetz, who usually plays center, spent much of the game at the fullback position blocking for Fix and sophomore Max Larson. Wolenetz also missed portions of the last three quarters with fatigue from the extreme heat.

Bainville scored three times in the second quarter. CCHS scored two, one on a Max Larson kickoff return and the other on a red zone fumble that was recovered by Grafton Bonsell in the end zone. The score was knotted at 32 going into halftime.

Blue tried to cool down before the start of the third quarter but couldn’t recover. In the third quarter Bainville had several extra possessions by recovering onside and squib kicks. They scored every time they had the ball in the third as a tired Bulldog defense struggled to make tackles. Bainville put up 32 in the third while CCHS scored only once.

In the fourth quarter CCHS scored four times. So did Bainville. Fix ripped off scoring runs of 55 and 39 yards. He also ran a kickoff back. However, Blue couldn’t overcome poor tackling from their tired defense. In the final seconds of the game, freshman quarterback Jared Pardee engineered a scoring drive which ended as time expired on a 45 yard touchdown pass from Pardee to David Ashbrook.

The final score of the game was Bainville 91, CCHS 65. The Bulldogs had their best offensive game of the season but it was also their worst on defense. If they can make some defensive stops and continue to block well enough to get Fix into the open field, they should be able to take down the Terry Terriers this Saturday night at Rowley Field.
