ATV safety presentation, May 9

ATV ownership has greatly increased in recent years. ATVs have become not only popular recreational vehicles, but are increasingly important as handy equipment for farmers and ranchers. ATVs have replaced the horse on many cattle operations. Producers are now using ATVs for many different chores and tasks. Homeowners have ATVs for work and play. ATVs can be fun as well as helpful with many tasks.

However, it is important to remember that ATVs are serious pieces of equipment and can be extremely dangerous. Everyone is aware of accidents that have occurred involving ATVs within the local community. They are not just occurring here, they are happening nationwide. Large numbers of young people operate ATVs daily for both recreational and work purposes. Youth may be at increased risk for injuries because of their size, lack of maturity and experience, and their willingness to take risks.

Ken M. Nelson, McCone County Extension Agent, will be offering an ATV safety presentation for students at Ekalaka Public Schools on Wednesday, May 9, starting at 12:30 p.m. The presentation is open to anyone, including members of the public, interested in ATV safety. Nelson, a licensed instructor for the ATV Safety Institute, does public presentations promoting ATV safety around the region. He also offers an ATV Rider Course, a 5 hour hands-on certification for ATV riders.
