  • Southwest Montana provides distinctive stories

Rick and Susie Graetz, University of Montana|Updated Jan 9, 2020

An important portion of The Corps of Discovery's journey occurred in southwest Montana. On July 19, 1805, Lewis and his men were struggling up the Missouri between present-day Upper and Lower Holter lakes. "from the singular appearance of this place I called it the gates of the rocky mountains." The next day, searching for "the three forks of the Missouri," they entered the first of southwest Montana's big valleys – Helena's Prickly Pear Valley. Arriving at the meeting of t...

  • Dogs down 'Stangs

    Updated Jan 9, 2020

Last Friday night at home the CCHS Bulldogs overcame an eight point deficit at the end of the third quarter to force overtime and wound up with a four point victory over the Jordan Mustangs. The Dogs' defense was paramount in the win, as was their key rebounding late in the contest. Shayne Enos played huge for CCHS. The junior seemed to out-jump everybody in the gym in the fourth quarter and overtime, corralling several offense rebounds and getting putbacks. Five of his...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Jan 9, 2020

Since our son Bret bought into our ranching operation when he came back to the ranch after college, I am no longer the right hand man in this operation. I have been demoted back to assistant nobody, which is a great title. I love my life of part-time cowgirl and part-time County Superintendent of Schools. However, occasionally I come to the conclusion that I need to get a full-time job. The problem with a part-time job is that the ranch manager/CEO/husband person feels that since my hours are somewhat flexible that I can be...

  • Conversations with God

    Updated Jan 9, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, mending day happens to all of us; there are sock, shirts, jeans, you name it and it probably needs mending. Besides clothing, there is upholstery, fences, railings, relationships, and even broken hearts to mend. Mending clothing isn’t all that difficult but on mending day, aren’t we ever so thankful that You did not give us a ‘dozen children’. We’re thankful and grateful for the three special girls (or are there five girls now?) who always called us substitute parents even though they...

  • Montana Tales and Trails

Bruce Auchly, FWP Region 4 Information Officer|Updated Jan 9, 2020

Some of the hardest questions to answer start with why. Why will fish bite one day and not the next, or even stop biting when they were having a feeding frenzy a minute ago? Why did prehistoric people use a particular cliff face to draw a petroglyph? Why can't I win the lottery? Okay, scratch that. Just the other day, an acquaintance asked why magpies are black and white. First, magpies are not just black and white. Their colors include shades of gray, green and blue. In the...

  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Jan 9, 2020

I am a rancher, registered nurse, past Republican Chair of the Montana Legislature’s Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee and a Senior Citizen. A fundamental conservative principle is to care for our children, our elderly and vulnerable citizens. The Montana State Health and Human Services Department must have adequate State funding to pull down the 2 to 3 times Federal matching dollars or critical healthcare services across Montana will disappear. Critical services to children, elderly, mentally ill and d...

  • Know the difference between swift foxes, coyotes and red foxes

    Updated Jan 9, 2020

Do you know the difference between a coyote, a red fox and a swift fox? If you are hunting predators in Southeastern Montana, you need to know, because the swift fox is a species of concern and cannot be shot or trapped in this region. Swift foxes are much smaller than coyotes or red foxes and much less common, but there are some similarities that can be misleading if people don't know what to look for. Swift foxes are about the size of a house cat, smaller than red foxes and...
