    Captain Janet Nies Baker, a 1972 graduate of Carter County High School and Ekalaka native, was the first female to be sworn into uniform for the Montana Highway Patrol on April 9, 1979.     James Richard "Jim" Tatge of Nemo, SD, passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2022. Jim was born on June 27, 1953 to Alvin and Mavis (McAmis) Tatge of Alzada, Montana. He came home from the hospital in the family airplane and was enamored with flying from that day on. Jim was in a car accident on February 1, 2022 and suffered a severely broken neck.     The Department of Livestock (DOL) is asking Montanans to be aware that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been diagnosed in domestic poultry and wild birds in 18 states to date in 2022.     One teenager died and another was injured in a crash on Highway 7 early Saturday morning, March 19. The Montana Highway Patrol said the two people were headed south near mile marker 9 at about 2:30 a.m. when the car went off the road and rolled several times into a pasture.
