  • Conversations with God

    Updated May 28, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, while living through this special Memorial season this week, it is a season that we hold dear to our hearts, pondering on the precious memories of those who have departed. If our heart aches, it is more for us than for them. With each heartache, each memory, we may tell ourselves with determination, that this is the last, that here is the logical point for the past to grow quiet. But – no known logic works on the worst of facts, when we think about the death of someone we have lov...

The total positive cases in Montana is 479. On May 20th, Governor Bullock issued the directive outlining Phase 2 of re-opening Montana. Phase 2 begins on June 1st. Even though the directive allows for people to gather in groups of fifty, social distancing is still recommended whenever possible, even...

  • OPINION: Whose side is the PSC on, anyway?

    Updated May 28, 2020

Oops...they’ve done it again….On Tuesday, April 21, the Montana Public Service Commission reversed their decision of March 16 in favor of NorthWestern Energy, again. At that meeting the commission told NWE they would have to provide more details about their acquisition of an additional 25% of Colstrip Unit 4 for $1. The PSC told the utility there were too many unanswered questions by concerned citizens and the Montana Consumer Council before they would approve. (Talon Energy of Pennsylvania wants half of the 25%, so NWE has...

  • Bicycle safety a concern as children pedal into summer

    Updated May 28, 2020

Since 1956, the month of May has been recognized as National Bike Month and that continues this year as cycling is considered a healthy option to stay active. More people, especially children, have been seen riding around Ekalaka in 2020. One reason is that students have been home for several weeks amid the current pandemic and school closures. As warmer weather approaches, bicycling is a great excuse for kids to get some fresh air and exercise, but it is also important to stay safe. The National Highway Traffic Safety...

  • 'Ag in Color' drawing contest statewide winners

    Updated May 27, 2020

Earlier this spring, students from across Montana submitted entries to the 2020 Montana 'Ag in Color' design contest. The annual contest is hosted by the Montana Farm Bureau Federation. Normally, the winners of the contest earn a fun day in Helena to be honored, to spend the day with state dignitaries and to celebrate Montana agriculture. This year, that event couldn't happen. Kimber Ross of Ekalaka was this year's statewide kindergarten drawing contest winner. Her teacher thi...

  • Two legal cases alter election rules as June 2 primary looms

Alex Sakariassen, Montana Free Press|Updated May 27, 2020

HELENA — Last month, Montana Free Press added a roundup of pertinent information for primary voters to its 2020 election guide. In the weeks since, a pair of legal cases have necessitated some updates. Here’s what’s happened so far. On May 1, five tribal governments and two Native voting rights organizations filed a motion in Yellowstone County District Court seeking a temporary injunction against Montana’s Ballot Interference Prevention Act. BIPA, which was approved by Montana voters on the 2018 ballot, established a stric...

The Montana unemployment rate remains below the national rate of 14.7% in April. “Montana took early and aggressive action to combat the virus and save lives, allowing us to be one of the first states in the nation prepared to reopen,” Governor Bullock said. “While we are not immune to the significant economic challenges facing the nation, we are working every day to safely...

  • Cooking in the West

    Updated May 27, 2020

In honor of National Beef Month, I have decided to rerun a branding etiquette column since I have had numerous requests to repeat it. One of the nicest compliments I have received is when readers have told me they have this column posted on their refrigerator or they have shared it with some of their branding crew. Sadly, as the population has become more removed from agriculture, there are many misconceptions about branding. Rather than being a gathering of neighbors to work together to get a big job done, it is often...

  • Community garage sale falls victim to coronavirus

Chamber members who attended a regular meeting earlier this month discussed options for holding the event. The sale is traditionally held each year, rain or shine, but the pandemic created a new and unexpected factor.
