  • Hat Tips

    Dean Meyer|Updated Jul 12, 2018

Hello, I really don’t care for a lot of things that happen on the Fourth of July - I used to. I used to like fireworks, but as I’ve aged, they have lost a lot of their bang. And when you have horses and dogs near a city, it is stressful because cities will announce, “No fireworks inside city limits.” So, that means celebrators drive a mile or two out of town and set them off by our pasture. I used to like parades, but as I’ve aged, parades don’t carry the same appeal they used to. When a five-year-old kid can beat me to...

  • Letter to the editor

Eric Moore, Senate District 19, Miles City|Updated Jul 12, 2018

As usual, the Billings Gazette editorial board demonstrated its left wing bias and reluctance to ascertain the facts in its opinion piece opposing the opportunity for Montana voters to have a say in the fiscal future of their state. Montana legislators are considering calling a very brief special session to put two referenda before the voters dealing with a pair of ballot initiatives that will greatly effect Montana’s budget for the foreseeable future. Yes, it will cost some money. While $90,000 is a lot of money to you a...

  • Bright Ideas

    Lois Lambert|Updated Jul 12, 2018

My article didn’t get written in time to be included in the 4th of July holiday paper. My husband explains his refusal to hurry, saying he had rushed to beat deadlines for nearly 30 years. He refuses to do that in retirement. Well, that is his reason; I just didn’t nail down my choice of subject until too late to beat the deadline. My final choice of subject was the shooting of journalists at a Maryland newspaper. Carter County folks probably carry more guns than Maryland residents. But we were taught as children not to poi...

  • The final bell

    Ryan OConnell|Updated Jul 12, 2018

The hallway clock in Ekalaka Elementary is trapped at 9:46. Made in Minneapolis, Minnesota by the Miller Program Clock Company, it is self-winding and powered by two 1.5 volt dry cells, each roughly the size of a soda can. The upper level of the school is warm and getting warmer as sunlight soaks the empty rooms. Downstairs, the basement is cool and surprisingly bright along the windows. Voices echo. Classrooms seem stretched without desks and chairs. Many are completely...
