  • Conversations with God

    Updated Aug 27, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, sitting by the window full of sunshine with the address and birthday book open, one can’t help but remember, that You are in command with both life and death. So – as time has passed, it is time to change a few lines in these books, so with pencil in hand, we give Retirement Center addresses to a couple dear friends and an Auntie, now all in their declining years. Our mobile society sees Church family and our own family moving, one place or another, all due to lay-offs or job chang...

Tom and Kathy (Major) Stieg were married May 29,1970, at the Congregational Church in Ekalaka. To celebrate 50 years of marriage, an outdoor open house was hosted by their family on August 7 at the property of the same church in which they were married (now the Ekalaka Bible Church). The party was delayed because the couple's actual anniversary fell amidst the thick of the pandemic. Many family members and friends joined them for the afternoon....

  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Aug 27, 2020

Today I read two articles from the online magazine “The Conversation” on boredom. The pandemic of 2020 has certainly made the emotion of boredom a much greater possibility. I contend that my childhood in Carter County allowed me to adapt to any vicissitudes of boredom. I learned to work with boredom and not against it. This was perhaps one skill which has stayed with me over the years, and is unquestionably an asset now. Today in the 21st Century, boredom has been found to be helpful by psychologists in that it enc...

With the canny sophistication of the savviest politician on the Hill, Alice uses her celebrity to her advantage, testi...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Aug 26, 2020

I am not sure if I have ever seen more floaters on the rivers of Montana this summer. I believe Covid has made camping and fishing the 2020 thing to do. Floating the Yellowstone River is always a fun family outing, but the river demands respect as every year it claims lives. This is a tale of a floating incident that had a happy ending, but it underscores how quickly river accidents can happen. Remember, it is cool to wear your life jacket even when the river is low and slow like it is now. Even if it is not cool, I always...
