Thank you to the organizers of the Carter County Fair parade on August 14, 2021. It was a great parade and theme. I was honored to ride with the four hometown heroes on the float. I worked with them and they always made bad situations turn out the best way they could. Peb Cline was also a patriot who served the United States as well as a hometown hero. Louise Dague was always cool and calm and used common sense with ambulance calls. Also, Louise and EMTs were always there to help with other emergencies from fires to law enforcement...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Sep 3, 2021

We have been in the retail/food service business now for two and a half months, and many readers have asked how that is going? The answer to that is very well after the first couple days. The first couple days were not our brightest shining moments I can tell you. On the first morning, patrons were lined up on the sidewalk fifteen minutes before we were supposed to open. We were fortunate that many customers were eagerly anticipating our opening. Our ribbon cutting ceremony was supposed to be the first thing that morning, but the Chamber of...

  • Conversations with God

    Sep 3, 2021

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, recalling a ‘happening’ from a long time ago, was fascinating. Several of us gals had to deal with those pre-college physicals. None of us were really that tall but several of us were delighted to see that we WERE taller than five-feet. Woo-hoo – even though it was only one-quarter inch. Time passed, we’d kept in touch, then several of us were less than thrilled when a recent measurement set two of them, once again, at under five feet. Friend K.G. said, “No wonder my motto has always been “Quality, n...

Hello: My name is Gary Roberts, and I graduated from CCHS in 1952. The purpose of this notice is to pay tribute to the fine teachers I had at the high school in the late forties and early fifties. These teachers were: Miss Driscoll, Miss Schied, Mrs. Buck, Coach Ed Short, Mr. Lambert, and the principal, Mr. Rowley. There were other good teachers, but these, in my opinion, were the best. They gave me the background and the discipline to go on to college, get some degrees, and then teach at the...
