  • From the desk of Jim Phalen

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

Returned for another opinion from Tobin’s desk. Thanks for some review from the previous week and especially for Bible verses as well as those Catholic ideas. Quite something that those Catholic ideas were followed in the Eagle with the election of the proclaimed Catholic President. So there is a lot of real and fake news!!! Jesus is the answer for your life today! Above Him there’s no other! Jesus is the way!!! John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. That whosoever believeth in Him shoul...

  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

There’s a time for everything. I have been wanting to write this letter for a long time. Listening to the Vice President Debate the other night that Socialist that’s running for Vice President with Joe Biden made the time right for this letter. When Harris was asked about abortion she said it’s my body, but the way I understand it the baby has it’s own body that’s growing in time of conception. If you plant any kind of a grain you get a crop if weather is right. When a woman gets pregnant she is pregnant with a living hu...

  • Plymouth Rock and relatives

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

The Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 traded newfound religious freedom for harsh living conditions being unprepared for the bitter winters of New England. The Plymouth historical organization reports that two or three people died each day during their first two months on land, and only 52 people survived the first year. Even so, today there are an estimated 10 million Americans (and 35 million people worldwide) who descend from those original passengers according...

  • Montana needs an Indigenous People's Day

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

“Destiny is the scape-goat which we make responsible for all our crimes and follies; a necessity which we set down invincible when we have no wish to strive against it.” Alexander Belfour (1767-1829), Scottish novelist. In 1296 English invaded Scotland, and two wars resulted. Scotland gained their independence, more or less. It is not remarkable that Belfour wrote the quote above. To my mind, he is writing with the past English occupation. Let’s consider now the mind of the Indigenous of the New World in relation to the q...

  • Conversations with God

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, sometimes when we’re hungry, memory kicks in and a scent seems to drift by us, makes us ‘think’ of our Mommy baking bread. Yum! Our Mom was the best baker in our neighborhood – just ask any of the neighbors! Even when Mom’s sisters would visit us once in a blue moon, they’d tell Mom that the bread she made tasted so good; “Just like their own dear Mother made; so, could I please have another slice?” Miniature loaves of Zucchini bread that an out of town friend brought over to share ...

  • A Personal Experience of Lawrence Johnston

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

Deciding I was as well concealed as possible for the moment, I lay there thinking of the past and speculating as to my chances for a future. The area was soon swarming with curious civilians and German troops. I could hear their shouts above the exploding ammunition in the burning plane. It would be dark in a short time. My chances of escaping would be much better then. The Germans realized this too, and were combing the countryside. Next thing I knew, a trooper came crashing through the underbrush and stepped right on me....

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Nov 23, 2020

by Susan Metcalf One of the nicest compliments I receive is when readers tell me that they have hung my column on their refrigerator or mailed it to someone (often anonymously) to try to make a point humorously and semi-tactfully. Since we are going into the holiday feast season, I am often asked to re-run my house rules for holidays that might serve as a gentle reminder of family dinner etiquette. However, this year is like no other year, so these have been adapted for Covid Holidays! Grouchy Grandma's House Rules for the...

  • Local racers win big

    Updated Nov 23, 2020

At the start of the 2020 Montana-Bump-N-Run season, organizers weren't even sure if there would be a season. Three local residents ended up having a lot of success over the course of the season, which was filled with nine points races. The association had a year-end awards banquet on November 14 where those local drivers that traveled the circuit were honored. Justin Stieg, driver of car #2, ended the season as the Super Stock points champion. Stieg entered eight races this...
