  • Benefit for Burch next weekend

    Local veteran Rich Burch lost his home located on Senator St. in Ekalaka to fire on February 21st. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. Burch was not home at the time of the fire. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department was on scene. The home is still standing, but due to extensive damage it is not yet known whether or not the structure can/will be saved.     The Mark Wright benefit was a huge success. As of Tuesday, over $17,000 has been donated. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. members and area EMTs thank all who donated to and attended the benefit held on June 11th.     Loyd and Phyllis Townsend reached their 74th wedding anniversary on August 30th! They were married in Miles City on August 30th, 1948. Loyd, age 92, was born in Camp Crook, South Dakota and “Phyl,” 91, was born in Ekalaka. Both graduated from Carter COunty High School, Loyd in 1948 and Phyl in 1949. They have two children.     A fire that started on Monday approximately sixteen miles south of Ekalaka on Highway 323 burned 3,177 acres. The fire was aided by high winds and jumped the highway, making it to Box Elder Creek. Four different producers had land burned. The fire was about six miles long and one mile wide.     Samples from three deer harvested in southeast Montana have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. These are the first positive results in the southeastern corner of the state.     Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department, along with the aid of some community volunteers, cleaned Main Street last Thursday prior to the county fair. Each volunteer spent anywhere between three and fourteen hours sweeping and shoveling gravel, sand and dirt off the street. Weeds were also removed from cracks in the pavement and concrete.
