Smart driver class for senior citizens

Carter County Senior Citizens will sponsor a driver safety class called Smart Driver on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. This class is the updated version of the old “55 Alive” class developed by AARP.

The driver safety class is designed as a review for senior citizens. There is a work book and a video to go along with it, and open discussion on different segments of the class. Area residents 55 or older can take the class for $15.00 if they are an AARP Member, or $20.00 if they are not.

The class is four hours and there is no test at the end. Auto insurance companies should give discounts on insurance premiums if those taking the class send in certificates of class completion. The discount can last for two to three years, depending on the insurance company.

People younger than 55 can take the class as well. The cost is the same, but insurance companies may not give a discount.

This worthwhile class will take place on June 14 at the Senior Citizens Center in Ekalaka, beginning at 10:00 a.m. From noon until 1:00 there will be a break; the class will resume from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Most folks feel they learned something of value at the last class. Just doing a review can help everyone feel like a more confident driver. Interested persons should call Carole Carey at 775-6644, or Karen Carroll at 775-8751 to pre- register. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Some of the subjects covered will be adjusting the vehicle, safe following distances, speeds on highways and interstates, exits and entries on interstates, driving in cities, round-abouts, reaction times, etc. Organizers look forward to seeing all in attendance.
