Sioux Ranger District issues fire restrictions

On September 9, the Sioux Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest issued an order placing fire restrictions on all National Forest lands in Carter County and Harding County, South Dakota. This order is effective until December 1, unless rescinded earlier.

The order prohibits the following acts:

1) Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire.

2) Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

Violations of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
