A 4-H letter

September 29, 2017

4-H week is here and it is time to celebrate and look at the memories that we have made over the past year. We need to look at all we have gained from 4-H and look at where we would be if we hadn’t been in 4-H. This organization has done a lot for me personally. It has taught me leadership and public speaking skills that are going to help me throughout my enitre life. 4-H has also given me a lot of opportunities and helped me grow my herds into what they are today, with the quality of stock I have now.

Being in 4-H, and especially an older member in the organization, I am given so many chances to use leadership skills in my own club and in the county. These leadership skills are learned over time, from the offices we held when we were young in the club to the offices we hold now that require more responsibility. These leadership skills enable me to broaden my scope and help people outside of 4-H as well. Our club has done numerous community services for the community. I have also been able to do public speaking within this organization, and that has really helped me not be afraid to stand up in front of a group of people without being nervous and scared.

I am a big livestock guy in 4-H, which leads much of my focus. Showing animals at the fair has increased my awareness of animal quality. When I started raising my own stock it was lower quality animals and I didn’t have a very big herd. Now my herds have grown tremendously in size and quality. I have, in my mind, very high quality livestock that has competed very well, not only at our county fair but at other bigger fairs.

4-H has also taught me what to look for in a good animal. This has helped me with livestock judging contests I have been in and had success in.
