Letter to the editor

September 28, 2018

The Ekalaka Board of Trustees recently authorized the purchase of a new activity bus and high school bleachers. Both decisions were based upon the professional opinion of many stakeholders with respect to safety and operational efficiency.

The Bus Depreciation Fund is a Special Revenue Fund, meaning that it is legally restricted to expenditures for specific purposes. Authorized by MCA 20-110-147, the Bus Depreciation Fund can only be used for adding, replacing or equipping buses. Our current activity bus needed to be replaced, as our students’ safety as they travel throughout Montana is non-negotiable.

The State Major Maintenance Aid Account is limited to ongoing building and safety concerns. The priorities of this fund is expressly listed in statute: MCA 20-9-525 (2)(a) First, making any repairs categorized as “safety”, “damage/wear out” or “codes and standards” as referenced in the K-12 Public Schools Facility Conditions and Needs Assessment Final Report prepared by the Montana Department of Administration. The safety and condition of the bleachers at the high school is a priority concern and the price is expected to significantly increase in the very near future.

The cost of the bus and bleachers will not come from the General Fund. This fund pays for salaries, benefits, curriculum and many other operational expenses associated with running a school district. I welcome the public to call with any concerns or questions that you may have with respect to school district funding. You may reach me at (406) 775-8626.

Respectfully,

Daniel Schrock

Superintendent
