VFW Auxiliary selects winners of essay contest

Local VFW Auxiliary members recently presented awards to Carter County eighth graders for writing about what freedom means to them.

Katie Tooke recently won second place in an essay contest put on by the VFW Auxiliary.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Cathy Frye, the students wrote essays for a contest sponsored by the Auxiliary. Jaycie Montgomery won first place, relating several personal experiences of people she knew in her writing. The second place essay was authored by Katie Tooke. Cardell Laughrey was awarded third place. All three received a medal, certificate and cash award. Winning essays have been forwarded for further competition.

Also receiving recognition were J.W. Elmore, Heidi LaBree, Codi Melton, Tyra O'Connor, Jaden Pardee, Royce Tooke, and Sean Wolenetz.

Some of the essays will be presented in May when the Auxiliary hosts annual Memorial Day activities.

Upon conclusion of the presentation, Local VFW Auxiliary members thanked all who made the contest possible.
