Redeeming Time

August 16, 2019

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, it was surprising to discover that some of us have incorrect blinking habits. There are even exercises designed to develop correct blinking so that the fluid movement of the eyelids prevents dry eyes. That’s when ‘time’ or seconds become real. One learns correct blinking as in: relax, close eyes, count three seconds, open eyes, count two seconds, repeat. Another exercise is: shut eyes, flutter the lids but don’t OPEN your eyes, flutter and count slowly to 100.

The Devotional’s Daily reading told about the job You have given us. We’re to be stewards of our time. It’s quite amazing when we think that we’ve each been given a little ‘chunk of eternity’ which we call ‘time’. It’s doled out to us in increments of seconds, minutes, hours, days, etc. There are also golden, God-given ‘moments in time’: a rainbow, a bed of blossoming flowers, a baby’s smile, a merry breeze dancing over a meadow of waving grass; oh, we could go on and on about golden moments.

How easy it is to waste time. Our hope and prayer should be to leave a legacy of ‘time’ spent with You and for You, because that is eternal. There are always procrastinators, time-wasters, and those who kill time. Henry Thoreau cautions, “You cannot kill time without injuring eternity.”

Each of us has been entrusted with a small portion of ‘time’. We’re told to invest time wisely. Your word (Eph. 5:16) says we are to be ‘redeeming the time….’

“Only one life, ‘twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” That sentiment of time is on a small wooden plaque which Grandpa gave to our Dad many years ago. That sentiment still holds true today. We need to remember that yesterday is gone, tomorrow is in Your hands and that we only have this very moment of time. Rather makes one stop and think – maybe!

Love, Mara
