CCHS off to 3-0 start

CCHS took care of business against conference opponent Culbertson last Friday night at Rowley Field. Again, Blue's ability to run the ball offensively and stop the run defensively were paramount to victory.

On their first possession, CCHS drove the length of the field, eventually scoring on a seven yard run from Turner Tooke. A completed pass from Tooke to Mick O'Connor on the conversion gave Blue an early 8-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, Tooke scored again, this time from 9 yards out.

One of the Cowboys' only bright spots in the game came in the final seconds of the first quarter when they converted a long pass on a fake punt. The play set up a five yard touchdown run from freshman Justice Bengochea. Culbertson's quarterback ran in the extra point, drawing the Cowboys to within six.

Junior back Shayne Enos flashed some of his speed in the second quarter, scoring on runs of 38 and 9 yards. Tooke ran in one extra point and O'Connor ran in the other. Blue led at halftime, 30-8.

In the second half Culbertson tried to open up their offense and air the ball out. Though Bulldog defensive ends weren't getting sacks, they were creating enough pressure to force errant throws. On plays where the ball was catchable, Bulldog pass defenders were almost always in the hip pocket of Cowboy receivers.

Midway through the third quarter, a bad snap led to a safety that extended the Bulldog lead. Tooke then broke a long scoring run (54 yards) with 4:43 left in the third.

Culbertson did score one more time on a 52 yard run in the third quarter. After that, it was all Bulldogs as they chewed the clock on their way to victory.

Seth Kennedy carried the ball almost every play for the Bulldogs throughout the remainder of the game. Culbertson loaded the box and put all eight defenders within a few yards of the line of scrimmage, but it didn't matter. Blue's offensive line still created enough movement up front for Kennedy to continue to run for first downs. Kennedy ran hard and was featured as the game's closer. He was rewarded with a one-yard scoring run with seconds left in the third quarter.

Late in the contest, younger Bulldog players got valuable playing time. The games final score came at just under the four-minute mark in the fourth quarter when freshman Tucker Tooke scored on a 7 yard run up the middle. He also ran in the conversion.

CCHS won by a final tally of 52-14.

This Saturday, CCHS will travel to Broadus for another conference game against the Hawks.
