School celebrates Arbor Day

Superintendent Stephen Ely speaks at the tree planting ceremony held at Ekalaka Elementary to celebrate Arbor Day.

On April 29th, Ekalaka Elementary students celebrated Arbor Day with an afternoon full of presentations and programs. The day's events were put together by fourth grade teacher Johanna Tooke. Students spent time at seven different stations celebrating the holiday, and many of those stations were headed by local volunteers. Phil Cook, Wayne Yost, Lynn Williams, Jenn Hall, Zeb Wright and the Carter County Conservation District all spent time with the students.

After the presentations, all students in grades K-12 met outside of the elementary school to observe a tree planting ceremony. Two trees, donated by Cook, were planted on the west side of the building in holes previously dug by Southeast Electric. One tree was planted in memory of the late Valerie Poppema who passed in March of last year after a courageous fight with cancer. The other was dedicated to Mrs. Sharon Carroll, longtime math teacher at Ekalaka Public Schools who is retiring at the end of the school year.

After the ceremony, students and teachers were treated to baked goods provided by Mrs. Amy Walker's fourth period FCS class. The class also helped with preparations prior to the celebration.
