Election connection

Tis the season, election season that is.

The federal primary election will be held Tuesday, June 7th and conducted as a poll election. Electors who will be unable to vote at the polls on June 7th can go to the election office and vote absentee. Absentee ballots were sent to permanent absentee voters on May 13. Electors who did not receive a ballot by mail and wish to vote absentee must contact the Carter County Election Office at 406-775-8749 to request a ballot either by mail or in person. Electors are reminded that there are three party ballots this year, the Democratic, Libertarian and Republican ballot. Voters may vote only one ballot.

Voter identification at the polls

Upon entering the polling place on election day, a voter is required to state his/her name and present a current identification showing their name and address. A driver’s license is always a good proof of identification. Other identification may include a Montana state ID, passport, military identification, tribal photo ID or a concealed carry permit. Cards to Sam’s Club or Costco and some credit cards will work as well. Other forms of identification may include a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck stub, government check or other government document.

If the elector does not have one of the items listed above, they may complete a polling place identification form and provide their driver’s license number. The election judge will then contract the Clerk and Recorder/Election Administrator’s office to verify the driver’s license number. If the number can be verified the elector will be allowed to vote a regular ballot; if the driver’s license number cannot be verified the elector will be required to vote a provisional ballot.

To ensure your vote is counted, bring sufficient identification to the polls and vote a regular ballot.

Contact the Clerk and Recorder/Election Administrator’s office with questions at 406-775-8749.

The Carter County Clerk and Recorder/Election Administrator’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Please call the office with any questions or concerns.
