'Dogs continue to battle

Bulldog sophomore Ethan Mellon drives while teammate Preston Jensen sets a screen in JV basketball action versus Baker on Tuesday night in Ekalaka.

The CCHS Bulldogs hung around with the Wibaux Longhorns in Wibaux on January 6th, but eventually lost by 17 points. The 'Dogs shot 6 of 14 from the free throw line (42 percent) while Wibaux went 8 of 18 (44 percent). CCHS did outscored Wibaux in the second quarter 13-10. Bulldog freshman Jace Pardee led the scoring in that frame where he got 8 of his 9 total points. Ethan Frye led CCHS in points with 12; Longhorn Wyatt Ree led all scorers with 22 in the contest.

CCHS played an exciting game down to the wire versus Jordan the following night at home. The 'Dogs had a one-point lead at halftime and lost by 2. Bulldog freshman Chace Loehding had a fine game at point-guard. He had 19 total points and hit 3 shots from behind the arc. Classmate Wyatt Melton also finished the game with double digit points (13). Blue had 16 turnovers and shot 7 of 18 (39 percent) on free throws. Mustang Jayden Saylor led all scorers with 22 points. Full court pressure from the 'Dogs helped to force 23 Mustang turnovers.

Turnovers plagued the 'Dogs in a non-conference home game versus the Spartans of Baker on Tuesday night. CCHS had 29 of them in the game; compared to 15 for Baker. Nine Bulldogs made their way into the scoring column, led by freshman Wyatt Melton with 17. Free throws were at a minimum on both sides; Baker shot 3-7 and CCHS was only 3-4. The 'Dogs were outscored in each frame and eventually lost by 26. Spartan Cooper O'Connor led all scorers with 25 points.

The JV Bulldogs had a huge fourth quarter, overcoming a six-point deficit to win in Wibaux last Friday. Ekalaka had 25 turnovers and shot 11 of 24 from the charity stripe. JV Bulldog Ethan Mellon led all scorers with 14 points, 6 of which came in the fourth quarter.

Jordan's JV squad flipped the script on CCHS JV the following night in Ekalaka. Blue was up one point at the end of the third quarter but was outscored in the final frame 9-18, eventually losing by 8. CCHS shot 33 percent on free throws compared to 68 percent for the JV 'Stangs. Mellon had 16 to pace the JV 'Dogs.

Baker's JV boys outscored the CCHS JV squad in each quarter as the Spartans won Tuesday's matchup in Ekalaka, 58-29. CCHS shot 57 percent on free throws; Baker was also 57 percent, but had 14 more attempts. Mellon led all scorers with 18 in the losing effort; 12 of those points came from behind the arc.
