Conversations with God

A full moon and chores are done

November 23, 2018

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, this month [on the 22nd] the full moon is called the Beaver Moon and according to folklore, that’s when the beavers become active while preparing for winter. A friend also mentioned that November’s Full Moon might also be called the Frosty Moon and some years that is for sure, but we’ll wait and see for this year!

In the still of the evening, the blue of the sky is as no artist can capture. The moon peeks through naked trees and seems to wink and grin as a long, slim cloud wipes across its face.

Long ago when we were kids back on the ranch, with chores done, we headed for the warm kitchen; the crisp evening air awakening our senses. The smell of wood smoke mingled with wafting odors of frying potatoes and meat. That smell is right next door to heaven, isn’t it Lord? Even old Pat the pup salivated as he trotted alongside.

In memory, one can almost hear the whinny or nicker of the horses in the old barn and corrals; we see the reflecting lamplight out curtained kitchen windows; hear the low of the milk cows - Ah Lord that pulls the heartstrings.

The work’s all done this Fall, Lord, the root cellar is stocked, a treasure chest of Harvest Memories of the wonderful aroma of “puttin’ up.” Canning jars on shelves glisten with captured jewels, the opulence of hard work in the picking of and putting away the abundant harvest.

Genesis 8:21-22: “And the Lord smelled a sweet savor; …while the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

Lord God, how gracious You are. You promised seedtime and harvest until You come. We thank You, Lord, for a bountiful harvest.
