Explore the night sky at Makoshika State Park

(Glendive, MT) – Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) invites you to explore the night skies at Makoshika State Park with special astronomy events on June 19 and 22.

Did you know that more than 80% of Americans live where they can no longer see the Milky Way at night? Join John Ashley, on Wednesday, June 19 at 7:00pm, as he presents Saving Our Stars: Documenting the Montana Night Sky. As a photographer and biologist, John has wandered around our state capturing the elusive beauty that can only be found in the dark – comets, meteor showers, northern lights, and the Milky Way. John will take visitors on a dazzling video and photographic tour of Montana's night skies, explain how to protect yourself from the negative effects of artificial light, and provide a glimpse into the future of tourism in the few remaining dark sky places.

For more astronomy fun, join us on Saturday, June 22 at 9:00pm, as Dr. Corrine Brevik presents Under the Makoshika Night Sky. Dr. Brevik will give a brief presentation on constellations before guiding visitors on an exploration of the Makoshika night sky using telescopes.

Dr. Brevik teaches physics and astronomy at Dickenson State University. Besides teaching, Corrine enjoys science public outreach. She is the coordinator for DSU's Discovery Dome, an inflatable planetarium that travels to schools. She enjoys giving public talks on various science topics and has taught numerous workshops for educators.

This program will take place at the Hiatt Amphitheater. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

For more information call the visitor center at (406) 377-6256.
