  • Montana legislature missing golden opportunity to secure Montana primacy over water

    Rich Roth|Updated Apr 13, 2023

As a third-generation rancher from Big Sandy, I am absolutely aware of the importance of water, water rights and the protection of Montana’s primacy over the water resources of this state. That is why I have traveled to Helena to testify in both the Senate and the House in support of SB 72 pending in the Montana Legislature. SB 72 will protect and assure that Montana’s own courts will continue to have the exclusive jurisdiction over the distribution of water and water rights both before and after the adjudication of exi...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Apr 13, 2023

My mother had an old medical reference book that we called “The Doctor Book.” Any time we or anyone in the neighborhood for that matter were ailing, she would get it out and disseminate remedies. I think I have become my mother--except that I have discovered WebMD. Using WebMD is much easier than looking things up in the doctor book. With just a couple clicks, you can find all the maladies alphabetized. They also have a wealth of information on everything from whitening your teeth to the benefits of doodling to improve you...

  • Conversations with God

    Updated Apr 13, 2023

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, we read the note Ms. Rosie wrote the day after Easter, mentioning how fun Easter had been at her place with her kids and grandkids. Then, the day after Easter, how they had all set aside their Easter bunnies in those bright candy baskets, but once the baskets were set aside, the colored eggs began to fade and begin to rot, and “cute” than turned into a chore to clean up. Not so much fun, but furthermore, it is then that we should begin our journey with Christ again. She added: “On t...

  • Financial relief is on the way

    Ken Bogner|Updated Apr 13, 2023

One of my top priorities this legislative session has been to provide financial relief to Montana taxpayers as families throughout our state are struggling with inflation and the high cost of living. I’m happy to report we have already accomplished a lot on that front. With the first-ever Republican supermajority in the Legislature this session, we have passed legislation to return $764 million dollars from the state budget surplus to taxpayers via income and property tax r...

  • HB 575 passes initial Senate vote Tuesday

Elinor Smith, UM Legislative News Service, UM School of Journalism|Updated Apr 13, 2023

HELENA -- The Senate passed a bill 30-to-20 Tuesday that would criminalize the abortion of a viable fetus, or a fetus that could survive outside of the womb, unless it is to save the mother’s life. The bill now has one more vote in the Senate before it moves back to the House for review. House Bill 575 would require that patients seeking an abortion get a determination of viability. Under the bill, viability of a fetus is presumed after 24 weeks or if uncertainty exists about the viability of the fetus. The bill does allow f...

  • Turkey populations stable ahead of spring opener

    Updated Apr 13, 2023

Montana's spring turkey season is set to open on Saturday, April 15. Southeast Montana's turkey populations are relatively stable across the region and handled the drought conditions well, according to FWP Region 7 upland game bird biologist Justin Hughes. However, populations of turkeys that are more isolated on the plains in mediocre habitat will be impacted more by recent weather patterns than turkeys living in riparian areas that had higher soil moisture and better...
