Plans for the Days of '85 are continuing as the event draws nearer. The annual county fair and rodeo is slated for Thursday, August 8th through Sunday, August 11th this year. On July 13th, the Sioux Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest experienced a thunderstorm event with winds exceeding 100mph, causing damage to some developed sites, power outages, as well as blocked roads and trails. Lily “Eileen” Treadway has been awarded the Carter County Congregate Meal Bid for fiscal year 2024/2025. The meals will be served Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning Monday, July 22nd. Anna Heggen LaBree In 1884, Anna Heggen LaBree's grandfather Edward Heggen filed his homestead three miles NE of Ekalaka. He and his brother George helped build some of the first buildings in Ekalaka. George Heggen's broad ax used for these buildings is currently in the Carter County Museum. The lack of moisture on the Sioux Ranger District has created the need for the Custer Gallatin National Forest to implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions in the Long Pines area in both Carter County, MT and Harding County, SD.
