    Yvonne Hollenbeck|Updated May 5, 2022

(Editor’s note: Local Mary McCamish spotted this article recently in the Tri-State Livestock News and wanted to share it with Eagle readers. Mrs. McCamish also noted via a phone conversation on Monday that she strongly agreed with the writer.) There is so much misconception about farming and ranching these days, especially through social media, the news, and trendy television productions such as “Yellowstone.” Not only is most of the filming done in Texas rather than Montana, but how they portray cattlemen and ranch life is a...

  • Is Carter County growing?

    Bill Lavell|Updated May 5, 2022

When I saw the news that a meat processing plant is being built in Belltower, I was happy, but somewhat perplexed. My first thought was, is Carter County growing? I mean growing in population, of course. Now when I ask that question several things come to mind. The first one is what it used to be like. I was born near Belltower in 1938. The first six years of my life was spent at various places around Ekalaka, although we did go to Washington very briefly when I was too young to remember. In 1944, we moved into Ekalaka and I...

  • Conversations with God

    Updated May 5, 2022

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: April showers bring May flowers, a bit of snow helps too. There’s Daffodils and red Tulips and some Flax turning Blue. Shy violets hide ‘neath dewy grass, ‘resting’ at “Violet Springs.” Birds atwitter, feeding, nesting. “MAY’S Spring Time!” my heart sings. We’ll start this month with fragrant crabs, or May Pole Dance will do. Say! Mickey Mouse was born this month and Frank Sinatra, too! We smell rain storm – taste a rain drop, rebirth still in the air. We watch the rain, then hear thunder – this sce...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated May 5, 2022

Teacher Appreciation Week is this week, and there are not enough words in the English language for me to express my appreciation for not only teachers, but the paraprofessionals, administrators, school staff members, janitors, bus drivers, and lunch ladies who have survived Covid and now face another pandemic--lack of respect for educators. Just a couple years ago, we were in Covid lockdown and suddenly parents developed a new respect for teachers. Two years later, educators find themselves under seige because of national...

  • Arbor Day celebration held at elementary school

    Updated May 5, 2022

submitted by Johanna Tooke Ekalaka Elementary spent the afternoon celebrating Arbor Day with art. Afterall, without trees, there'd be no pencils for drawing, paintbrushes for painting, paper or canvas for the landscapes to showcase the artist's scene and erasers for fixing mistakes. Granted, now that synthetics have been invented trees no longer are the sole supplier of these staples for an artist. Betty Cline, Jay Hoversland, and Susan Tooke shared their artistic talent with...
