  • Conversations with God

    Updated Apr 22, 2021

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, being privileged to read a Senior girl’s speech on STAYING ACTIVE/FIT brought back some childhood memories. Miss ‘Rosie’ also reminded us: “Trying to stay active and fit, sounds so boring and really not enjoyable, but it is a really big deal.” As a farm/ranch kid, we never thought about anorexia or obesity? We didn’t have time for that and we’d certainly never heard of all the electronics that folks have at their fingertips now. Most of those items weren’t even invented, back th...

  • Legislative update

    Jerry Schillinger|Updated Apr 22, 2021

We started off the week by rejecting a Senate amendment by Dan Salomon, that would have neutered HB112, banning guys from competing against girls in scholastic sports. This bill is headed for conference committee now and hopefully will come out in good form, be passed, and signed by the Governor. For the first time in over 20 years, the Legislature overrode a governor's veto. This bill reasserts legislative authority to enforce legislative intent on State agencies. The...

  • Letter to the editor

    Updated Apr 22, 2021

I almost wrote this letter last year, but thought I would be patient. Today is not a patient-type of day, I guess. Everybody should know that Luther & I have taken care of the Main St. benches for about 10 years now. We have paid for most of the supplies, paint, varathane & wood. The Town of Ekalaka has also donated money if I present them with a bill for supplies. We have provided nearly all of the labor. In 2015, four ladies from Ekalaka came to help me paint them because I could not get to it. At this time of year I am...

  • Gianforte approves changes to Montana election laws

    Alex Sakariassen, montanafreepress.org|Updated Apr 21, 2021

Gov. Greg Gianforte has officially ended the state's long-standing practice of allowing citizens to register to vote on Election Day, a change he said will help preserve the integrity of Montana's elections, but that critics have decried as a blatant attack on voter rights. Under House Bill 176, which Gianforte signed into law Monday, Montana voters will now be required to register no later than noon on the day before an election. Gianforte also signed Senate Bill 169,...

The Haulers of Agriculture and Livestock Safety (HAULS) Act of 2021 was reintroduced in the Senate by Senators Fischer (R-NE), Tester (D-MT), Wicker (R-MS), and Smith (D-MN) last month and more recently as a companion bill in the House by Tennessee Republican John Rose and Democrat Darren Soto of Florida. • Gov. Gianforte announces settlement agreement ending FWP bison plan

    Updated Apr 21, 2021

On Tuesday, Governor Greg Gianforte announced a settlement agreement that ends litigation between the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) and United Property Owners of Montana (UPOM). “Under the previous administration, FWP didn’t do right by farmers, ranchers, and private property owners. In its effort to spread bison across parts of Montana, FWP didn’t do enough to account for the impacts to local communities and relied on outdated data,” Gov. Gianforte said. “This settlement agreement protects our livestock...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Apr 21, 2021

The horse market is pretty much through the roof right now, which is great if you are selling, but not if you are buying. I know that I sound like an old fogey, but I have bought many horses for $500.00 in my lifetime, and every one of them turned out to be a great horse. Now, I am facing the fact that to buy a high quality horse, I will have to pay triple that price and add another zero. I just can't quite wrap my head around that, and I sure can't wrap my pocket book around paying $15,000 to $20,000 for a push button...

    Updated Apr 21, 2021

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. Until then, customers must continue to dial 1-800-273-TALK to reach the Lifeline. For 988 to work properly in the (406) area code, and in several other area codes and states around the country, 10-digit local dialing needs to be implemented. What is Changing? All telephone customers may begin dialing 10 digits (area...
