Ekalaka teacher secures Mid-Rivers grant

Ekalaka Elementary Kindergarten and First Grade Teacher Kristy Frye recently secured a grant from Mid-Rivers Communications in the amount of $910.27. The 2017 Mid-Rivers Educational Technology Grant will be used to purchase five new iPad applications.

Currently, every student in Mrs. Frye's classroom is able to use their own iPad at school.

"Using iPads in the classroom has greatly increased the engagement of my students, while allowing them to use their creativity in ways that I myself had never thought possible," Frye wrote in the grant application.

"Ipads have allowed me to differentiate student learning, helping to make sure ALL students are successful. Since receiving iPads for the classroom, I have taken several courses on how to meet classroom and grade-level standards using iPads. I would like to further improve my students' ability to read, write, and perform with some new iPad apps."

The five new applications that will be purchased with the grant money will help students write, read, and even allow for differentiation in teaching math concepts in an engaging way.

The grant will benefit the twenty-two students in Frye's classroom by ensuring students are working to their full potential, fostering the use of technology, and helping students to work at their own level.

Last Thursday Kathy McLane, Community Resource Specialist for Mid-Rivers Communications, stopped by Ekalaka Elementary to hand the grant check to Mrs. Kristy Frye.
