Conversations with God

Mending

January 10, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara:

You know, Lord, mending day happens to all of us; there are sock, shirts, jeans, you name it and it probably needs mending. Besides clothing, there is upholstery, fences, railings, relationships, and even broken hearts to mend. Mending clothing isn’t all that difficult but on mending day, aren’t we ever so thankful that You did not give us a ‘dozen children’. We’re thankful and grateful for the three special girls (or are there five girls now?) who always called us substitute parents even though they were nearly all grown up by the time they became a part of our family.

Mending clothing takes time and patience, needle and thread, scissors and patches and sometimes even the sewing machine is put to work. When the mending basket gets full, it’s time to get to work. Once started one can always ask You to bless the owner of the item of clothing we’re mending.

Leggings and sock are easiest to mend; fences are not impossible - they just take a whole different set of tools. Relationships take time and lots of prayer; but the hardest of all to mend is a broken heart. You know, Lord, broken hearts do happen and that is where You come in. Proverbs (12:18) tell us that we’re to guard our hearts for they are the wellspring of life. Helping to break hearts is ‘one who speaks like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health. The truthful lip shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.’ Your Word says that You make new hearts, and in another place, that our hearts shall live forever! You, oh Lord, are in the heart mending business. Grant us the grace to use wise tongues to promote health, to be menders, not breakers of hearts. Thank you, Lord.

Love, Mara
