Lady Bulldogs take 3rd at Southern C tourney

The CCHS Lady Bulldogs finished the Southern C Divisional Tournament in third place by defeating Plenty Coups, 69-47, in Saturday's consolation game.

The Carter County Lady Bulldogs ended another quality season with a third place finish at the Southern C Divisional Tournament in Laurel over the weekend. CCHS started the tournament with a 25-point win over Plenty Coups in the opening round. Five Lady Bulldogs scored in the game and four finished in double figures. The game was close until midway through the second quarter when Blue pulled away. As a team, the girls shot 20-32 from the free throw line.

In the semifinal, the girls played Jordan. CCHS had split games with Jordan during the regular season, losing in Jordan. In the second round of the district tournament, the Lady Bulldogs pulled away from the Lady Mustangs in the third quarter to secure a win. Jordan bested CCHS at divisionals though, drawing the teams' records to an even 2-2 against each other on the year. Foul trouble caught up to CCHS as four starters eventually fouled out of the contest. The 'Dogs had a 10-point lead to start the fourth quarter, but that lead shrunk to 4 in the games closing seconds. Regulation ended in a 54-54 tie, and short on players, CCHS lost in overtime by 7. Again, four Bulldog players finished the game with double-digit points. CCHS shot 21-38 (55 percent) on free throws.

The Lady Dawgs defeated a familiar Southern C Divisional opponent in Bridger Saturday morning in loser-out action. CCHS led throughout and won the game by 17 points. Heidi LaBree had a game-high 23 points for Ekalaka.

The win over Bridger set up a rematch with Plenty Coups in the consolation game of the tourney. CCHS went up early, but Plenty Coups caught fire in the second quarter and cut the Bulldog lead to 2 points at halftime. Blue took over in the third quarter when they went on a 20-8 run and went on to win, 69-47. Eight of the ten players who were suited for CCHS scored. CCHS shot 30 free throws in the game while Plenty Coups shot only 10.

Melstone defeated Jordan in the championship game, so CCHS was not able to challenge for second place and a chance at a fourth straight trip to the state tournament. District 4C teams took the top three spots at the Southern C Divisional. The CCHS Lady Bulldogs will return a strong team next year, though they will be losing two key seniors, Kari Kittelmann and Ella Owen.
