Cooking in the West

My favorite holiday of the year is Dr. Seuss's birthday, which was March 2. Yes, Theodor Seuss Geisel would have been 117 years old this week. He and his 60 plus books have inspired young readers since 1937 when “To Think I Saw It All on Mulberry Street” was published. There have been attempts to cancel Dr. Seuss by calling him racist, sexist, and every other “ist” imaginable, but his wit and wisdom have survived for generations of children to enjoy, and I hope that we can keep his legacy of freedom of expression alive despite the Cancel Culture mentality we are battling. I hope that he would have approved of my attempt to champion life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in this poem!

Whoville Pandemic

--by Dr. Sussan

The Who's down in Whoville caught a bug,

They could not congregate; could not hug.

They were told what they should think,

Told where and when they could eat or drink.

Mandated to follow ever-changing “science”,

They were shamed for daring defiance.

They must wear a mask or maybe two,

Or it will kill Grandma--and that won’t do!

To flatten the curve, they sheltered in place.

To the stores to hoard toilet paper they did race.

They locked down the elderly and made them sad.

They locked down the youth and made them mad.

Keep the kids home; don’t let them learn!

Keep the parents home; don’t let them earn!

They all got free money so they wouldn’t lack.

(However their grandchildren must pay it back.)

Freedoms are overrated--choose compliance.

Do not trust common sense for your reliance.

Stay home from church and don’t eat out.

The Covid virus lurks in there, no doubt!

If the Who’s disagreed and decided to speak up.

They would cancel them to make them shut up.

They would take away their social media voice.

Free speech was no longer a rightful choice!

They controlled the media who spun the spiel.

No Who really knew what was fake or was real.

They were convinced that coal and oil are very bad.

They must give up the lifestyle they have had.

The Who’s must learn to like plant based food,

And that rolling blackouts set a romantic mood.

Who girls will no longer excel at sports.

Transgender Who’s rule the courts!

Then they opened the borders to let everyone in.

They defunded the police so bad guys would win.

They staged peaceful protests that resembled riots,

Prepping the masses of Who’s for starvation diets.

It seemed things were going just as planned,

Controlled by the Who puppet master’s hand.

But there is unrest brewing in Whoville land....

Will the Who’s finally make one last stand?

I do not have a recipe for Green Eggs and Ham, but I have some other great recipes that will get kids in the kitchen!

Frito Chili Casserole:

1 pkg. Frito corn chips

2 cans chili beans

1 lb. hamburger

grated cheese

Fry hamburger with some chopped onion (if desired) and season. In a casserole dish, layer half of the Fritos, beef, beans, and cheese. Repeat with the other half. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Orange Jell-o Cake:

1 pkg. yellow cake mix

3 oz. pkg. orange Jell-o mix, dry

4 eggs

3/4 C. oil

3/4 C. water

Mix all together and bake in a 9 X 13 pan at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Prick holes in hot cake and pour orange glaze on top. (To make the glaze, use 3 C. powdered sugar combined with enough orange juice to make a pourable glaze.)

Lemon Cookies:

1 pkg. lemon cake mix

2 C. Cool Whip

1 egg

Mix all ingredients together and roll into 1 inch balls. Dip in powdered sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Watergate Salad:

1 large Cool Whip

1 med. can crushed pineapple, drained

1 pkg. INSTANT pistachio pudding

1 1/2 C. miniature marshmallows

Stir together, adding pudding mix last. Refrigerate to set before serving.
