BETHESDA, MD. A few months ago we explored the topic of antibiotic resistance in some depth. The media has continued to stress our imminent doom that would accompany a post-antibiotic era. However, an additional threat has been on the horizon for some time: antiseptic resistant bacteria. Antiseptics are different than antibiotics as antiseptics are able to target a wide variety of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, eukaryotic organisms) and they kill or inhibit the growth of an organism within 30 seconds to 1 minute of...

  • Hat Tips

    Dean Meyer|Updated May 18, 2017

Hello, It’s been several years since I have been to a horse sale. Unless, of course, you count bucking horse sales. I’ve been to Oklahoma City, Miles City, Kearney, Mesquite, Grassy Butte, Bismarck, and maybe some others for bucking horse and bull sales. I’ve been to cow and bull sales weekly for more years than I care to relate. I’ve been to production horse sales and for years we held one of our own. Where, coincidentally, the finest horses in the world were sold. But it’s been quite awhile since I’ve attended a horse con...

Last week I didn’t forget Mother’s Day, I just didn’t have anything new to say, until I looked up its history. A celebration of mothers was held by Greeks and Romans; they were honoring the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. The first Christian festival was known as “Mothering Sunday.” That was the fourth Sunday in Lent, a time when the faithful were expected to return to their “mother church on Mothering Sunday.” Ann Reeves Jarvis created an American holiday in the years before the Civil War. She organized “Mothers’ Day...

  • SEEC observes National Electrical Safety Month

    Updated May 18, 2017

Those who live on a farm know that not only is it hard work, but it can be dangerous, too. Each year, farmers are electrocuted when large farm machinery comes into contact with overhead power lines. Often, the situation occurs because a newer, bigger piece of equipment no longer clears a line the way a smaller one did. In addition, shifting soil may also affect whether or not machinery avoids power lines from year to year. The following tips will help keep everyone on a farm...

  • Poppies a remembrance of fallen veterans

    Lois Lambert|Updated May 18, 2017

As a child, I didn’t realize the significance of Memorial Day. I knew it as Decoration Day, and before I left home, in 1968, we put flowers on all relatives’ graves that we knew. The only relative ignored was the father of my great grandfather, Grover, and my great, great uncles Luther and Lee. Their father was a veteran of the Civil War, Reed Perry Debo. In my 20s, living in California, I could drive “in the hills” outside Livermore, California, and see poppies growing wild. My soon-to-be husband was a veteran, but neither o...

  • May's new pool update and thank you

    Updated May 18, 2017

The question of why motel pools do not have to have lifeguards and the town pool does is often asked. The answer is found in the Montana Code Annotated (50-53-107) and also in the Administrative Rules of Montana (37.115.1601). In those sections, code specifically singles out public/municipally owned swimming pools and bathing places and requires them to have lifeguards so as to ensure the operation of the facility to be sanitary, healthful, and safe. However, it also indicates that privately owned swimming facilities may not...
