A Veterans Day program took place at Carter County High School on November 11. Several local veterans were in attendance. Six were 'adopted' by different Ekalaka Public Schools classes. Each class made posters for their veterans based off of interviews with them. After the program their was a reception with pies, cookies and punch where students were able to speak more with the veterans....

Next week, Ekalaka Public Schools will observe Red Ribbon Week. The last week of October each year is designated as Red Ribbon Week. This is an annual national drug prevention campaign that encourages Americans to wear red ribbons in memory of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was kidnapped and tortured to death by members of a Mexican drug cartel in 1985. Ekalaka Public Schools is hosting a Child Find Developmental Screening on Tuesday, October 19th from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the grade school gym. This free developmental screening is designed for children ages 0 - 5. Carol (Peabody) Spencer is in her first year teaching in her hometown. The 2009 Carter County High School graduate said that her and her husband, Rusty, made the decision to move back to Ekalaka to be closer to her family ranch and because they wanted to be a part of the community. Concrete is being poured this week outside the new connecting wing at Ekalaka Public Schools. The project is now in its final stages. Aside from the exterior concrete, the new building still needs glass for one interior window as well as two exterior doors. Adam Miller spent a few grades during his elementary school years living in a small town of around 100 people, so he's experienced small town living before. When asked about his experience in Ekalaka so far, the new social studies teacher at Ekalaka Public Schools said that he "really likes the small-town feel of it." Music students in grades K-12 at Ekalaka Public Schools performed at a spring concert May 6th. The students performed a variety of music they had practiced throughout the year to showcase their skills. On April 29th, Ekalaka Elementary students celebrated Arbor Day with an afternoon full of presentations and programs. The day's events were put together by fourth grade teacher Johanna Tooke. Students spent time at seven different stations celebrating the holiday, and many of those stations were headed by local volunteers. Ekalaka Elementary District #15 recently made an offer, which has been accepted, to buy a private property located at 228 Senator Street in Ekalaka. The property consists of Lots 4 & 5, Block 2 of the Cady Addition, next to Rowley Field. The school has not yet taken possession of the property. Ekalaka Public Schools is selling two obsoleted school buses by sealed bid. Bids must be received by May 10th, with opening of bids at 4:30 p.m. on May 12th. The property will be awarded to the highest bidder. Buses may be viewed on May 5th from 1 to 3 p.m. The buses are both 53 passenger. One is a 2008 International and the other is a 2009 International. In February of last year, Ekalaka Elementary District #15 was selected for a $750,000 grant. The money, awarded by the Montana Department of Commerce Community Development Division, was granted "for the construction of a connecting wing between the elementary and high school buildings to secure the entrance and playground security," according to a letter from the governor's office that notified the school. Ekalaka Public Schools will be holding a kindergarten screening on April 8 separate from the developmental screening that is taking place on Tuesday, April 6. The screening for children who will be entering kindergarten next year will be on Thursday, April 8, between 12:30 and 1 p.m. in the gym.
