Dogs open season

December 15, 2017

Last weekend, Carter County High School basketball teams traveled to Lavina to play in a tournament. In their first game of the tournament—and the season—the Bulldog men took on a more experienced Westby-Grenora team. Although CCHS had six turnovers in the first quarter, compared to only one for the Thunder, they were down only one point at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Blue made only two field goals and the team was held to only six points. The Thunder put up 19, 12 of which came from beyond the three-point arc. After that, CCHS had trouble catching up. They finished the game with 23 turnovers and shot a mere 41% at the free throw line. The Thunder had 10 turnovers and went 7 for 10 at the stripe.

Cameron Wollman from Westby led the game in scoring with 20. Freshman Jared Pardee put up 14 for CCHS. The Bulldogs lost by a final score of 36-63.

In their second game of the tourney against Fromberg, the Dogs played much better. Though they still committed 17 turnovers, they also forced 25. Additionally, they shot the ball much better, and improved their percentage at the free throw line to nearly 69%. Freshman Seth Kennedy made three shots from behind the three-point arc.

Scoring was steady for CCHS in the first three quarters and they had a large enough lead so that all of the bench players were able to play some quality minutes in the final frame. Mick O’Connor led all scorers with 19 points.
