Carter County 4-H All Events Day

Carter County 4-H youth showcased their talents at the 2018 4-H All Events Day held June 4 at the Carter County Event Center.

There were 10 4-H youth in the market lamb project this year, and the day began at 10 a.m. with Market Sheep weigh-in. There were eight lambs weighed and tagged in Ekalaka and eight lambs and one goat weighed in Alzada on May 31. After all the sheep were weighed in, a Market Quality workshop was held that encouraged creativity in determining the food supply chain, highlighted the importance of animal ID and reviewed the withdrawal times of medication.

Foods Festival was the next event, and the 4-H'ers provided a wonderful display of food and decorated table settings. Each youth was interviewed by Amy Walker and Kelsie Gardiner. Senior member Heather LaBree won the Grand Champion ribbon with her "Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast" and Hannah LaBree received Reserve Champion Senior for her "Chicken Breast with Mushroom Cream Sauce." Participating Junior 4-H members included Heidi LaBree, receiving Grand Champion with her "Pizza Waffles," Keenan McInerney, receiving Reserve Champion for her "Taco Braid," Natalie Foxley, Colyn Higgins, Corlan Laughery and Jaden Pardee. Cloverbud member Tylinn Thomas participated in Foods Festival and received a blue ribbon. Darin Schallenberger competed in the Stir-Ups contest, which is similar to the popular show "Chopped," and received a blue ribbon, qualifying him to attend the Montana State 4-H Congress. Everyone attending enjoyed a potluck luncheon featuring all of the dishes prepared for the 4-H Foods Festival.

Following the potluck luncheon, 4-H youth tested their skills in Small Projects Judging. Several classes were judged, ranging from Best Needle to Give a Calf a Shot to Best Pork Loin. In the junior division, Grand Champion was Heidi LaBree, followed by Reserve Champion Corlan Laughery and the senior division Grand Champion was Heather LaBree, followed by Reserve Champion Hannah LaBree.

A Communications contest followed the Small Projects Judging with Mardee Guyer and Carrol Sparks serving as official judges. Hannah LaBree received Grand Champion on her Prepared Speech titled "Montana Beef on China's Plate." Heidi LaBree received Grand Champion on her Illustrated Talk titled "Manual Shooting Photography" and Colyn Higgins received a Grand Champion for his Demonstration on "Lego Robotics Rocket Launch." Hannah LaBree received Grand Champion and Heather LaBree received Reserve Champion in Career Communications, a new event focusing on interview skills. The day concluded with the awards ceremony. Participating youth received a certificate and gift.
