Lady Bulldogs split weekend games

January 31, 2020

Heidi LaBree (23) goes up for one of her several layups against The Custer/Hysham Rebels JV squad last Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Custer/Hysham Rebels last Thursday at home. All ten Bulldogs that were suited up for the contest scored, but they didn't do all of the scoring for their team. In what was a strange start to the game, one of the Rebel players got confused and took an apparent "fast break" the wrong way after a sideline inbound play and scored two points for the wrong team. The basket would be a sign of things to come for the Rebels who went on to lose by 22 points.

Lady Blue shot 73 percent on free throws, 44 percent on two-point field goals and 20 percent on threes in the contest. They out-rebounded the Rebels 31-20 while doubling them in steals (10-5). They also won the turnover battle, 15-19. Heather LaBree led CCHS in rebounds with 6 while Heidi LaBree led in points with 9.

Melstone, ranked fifth in the state, handed the Lady Bulldogs a tough four-point loss at home on Saturday. Blue started well and had an eleven-point lead at the end of the first, but the Lady Broncs put up 25 in the second and cut the deficit to only two.

Melstone's Draya Wacker, who had a game-high 25 points, had a big fourth quarter to help the Broncs stay undefeated by coming away with a four-point win.

Lady Blue made 9 of 16 (56 percent) free throws while the Broncs shot 16 of 29 (55 percent). CCHS shot 60 times from the field compared to only 40 for the Broncs, but the Broncs shot a higher percentage (50 percent compared to 37 percent for the Bulldogs). The Bulldogs also out-rebounded the Broncs, 24-14, while committing only 12 turnovers. Hannah LaBree led CCHS in rebounds with 10 and Heather LaBree led in points with 14.
