Editor's note: We're still tallying votes and researching history on Eagle readers' picks for the greatest Carter County athletes. One subscriber sent a fun list of Carter County sports trivia separate from his picks. A few of the athletes mentioned in this trivia will likely make the final list. In the meantime, we agree with Alvin Cordell that this will be a fun exercise for all who partake. The answers will be published in next week's paper.

1) This man owned an implement business in Ekalaka for many years. He was an all-around athlete at Northern State in Aberdeen, SD. He was elected to their Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University Of Montana in 1918. In 1917 he was named to Walter Camp's All-Service football team. He was a member of the Grizzly team that played the number one team in the nation, Syracuse University, to a 0-0 tie. He received the Golden Grizzly Award from the University of Montana.

2) This fellow graduated from CCHS in 1951. He has to be considered one of the all-time greats. He was a top scorer in basketball and quarterback on the football team. Some people called him "Whitie."

3) One of the toughest lineman ever at CCHS, he played both ways on the 11-man team in 1951. His father, also a "tough fella," was called the Big Kid.

4) This guy played half-back on that good '51 team. It has been said that getting hit by him was like having a big pig run over you.

5) This fellow only went to one day of school as a freshman, but, eventually returned to CCHS and became an outstanding athlete. He lost out on a year because of an eligibility rule. His nickname was "Poddy."

6) This kid spent his early years not far from Alzada. He ran a 9.8 second 100 yard dash in high school and clocked a 9.6 in college. After almost fifty years some of his records still stand at Belle Fourche. I consider this fellow and Bob Cordell as the best sprinters from the area.

7) This Ridgway area gal graduated in 2009 from school at Broadus, where she set records in track. She is currently considered the top marathon runner in the state of Montana.

8) This Boyes area athlete was considered one of the best ever all-around athletes at Broadus. He once filled in for a member of the bowling team and rolled a perfect 300 game.

9) This Alzada area athlete has to be considered one of the best lineman ever at CCHS. He played college football and was recruited to play professional football, but declined. A lot of people call him "Doke."

10) This fellow lived in Ekalaka and was a co-owner of an Ekalaka business in the 1930s. Playing for the New York Giants, he won two games in the 1921 World Series against the New York Yankees. He won 152 games in the big leagues. He holds a big league record for being the only pitcher to walk twice in one inning.
