Note: This article is the first in a series about the founders of the Carter County Geological Society and museum. The museum will host a meeting at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month through April, featuring a founder, their story, and items they have donated. The organized search for fossils in Carter County began in 1904 when Professor Elmer S. • Southwest Montana provides distinctive stories

Rick and Susie Graetz, University of Montana|Updated Jan 9, 2020

Defining a province like Southwest Montana is subjective. For us, an imaginary line commences at Lolo Pass west of Missoula and moves east along Interstate 90 and the Clark Fork River to Garrison Junction. Then it follows Highway 12 over McDonald Pass to Helena. From there, our boundary extends slightly in a southeasterly direction, taking in the Big Belt Mountains before heading to Bozeman and then along the Gallatin Range crest to West Yellowstone. The south and west line of...

    Raquel S. Williams, RN|Updated Jan 6, 2020

The holiday season can be extra stressful for adults and children with the change of routines and the extra demands of our time. We are running around trying to make sure we have the right presents for each family member and friend and our kids’ friends and teachers. Then there are the Christmas programs at school and church. Oh, wait, don’t forget about the Christmas parties at work and with friends. And, we have our regular activities to fit in there – work, cleaning the house, dishes, laundry, cooking, etc. Excess stres...

  • Conversations with God

    Updated Jan 6, 2020

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, reading an article entitled REFLECTIONS, a challenge was given: “IF you were another person, would you like to be a friend of yourself?” What a good New Year’s Resolution THAT would be for every one of us to make, right? But – like it or not, that is a hard saying. That challenge calls for some inner inspection. Does our Christian walk go with our talk? We know that we should pray our walk would show. A person has to live with himself and in so doing, it’s up to him to see to it t...

That amount is the third most ever recorded in a calendar year, and over 10 inches above normal. • Carter County Greats

    Updated Jan 6, 2020

If you picked up a copy of the Billings Gazette or checked out 406mtsports.com in December, you likely read at least a portion of their Montana Greats Project. The project, taken on by sports reporter Jeff Welsch, gives an opinion of the greatest athlete from every Montana town. It gives a brief overview on each athlete and was released in a series of articles in alphabetical order. A conversation about the project with a couple of local sports enthusiasts led to the idea of...

  • Letter to the editor

Kenneth Bogner, State Senator, MT Dist. 19|Updated Jan 6, 2020

Senate District 19, The first year of my term as your Senator has now come to a close. A lot has happened in that year and I want to take a moment to recap it. The year started with Montana’s 66th Legislative session. During the session I sponsored legislation that protected our property rights, grew Montana manufacturing, and recognized both our military veteran and cowboy heritage. I also had the privilege to carry both the student consent bill and the bill that eliminated the criminal statute of limitations for child s...

  • Hat Tips

    Dean Meyer|Updated Jan 6, 2020

Hello, I’ll start this week by wishing all of you a Merry Christmas. And probably a Happy New Year! Twas two nights before Christmas as I write this. It is with some regret, and also some relief, that I am letting you know that I am going to retire from writing my weekly column. No, it’s not something you did. It’s just that I don’t do as much as I used to and I don’t want to have to make anything up or exaggerate anything. That is how I roll. Well, maybe a little. I started writing a weekly column for the McKenzie County Fa...
