The hulking skeleton of a semi lies along Highway 212 near the pumping station between Hammond and Alzada, in the picture above that was taken April 2. Reports indicate a blown tire started the fire, which then consumed the truck and trailer along with four acres of pastureland before the flames were stopped by Alzada Volunteer Fire Department and local ranchers. The legislature ended Easter week on Thursday afternoon, so we scurried home for a quick and appreciated couple of days at home. I got to enjoy a little wheat and pea planting, Easter Sunday services and catch a few fish at the lake before being Helena bound on Monday. Farming on cow/calf operations gets slipped in instead of sleep between calving, feeding, branding, fencing, and all the other spring work. It is often a high-speed, high-stress form of diversification that causes a lot of laundry problems. Carter and Fallon Counties are holding a private applicator training on May 5th in Baker at the Fallon County Exhibit Hall. The class will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This class will cover topics on the private applicator exam. Those attending will be able to take the test upon conclusion of the class. Ballots will be mailed Thursday for school elections throughout Carter County. On the high school ballot that will be mailed to voters throughout the county is a building reserve fund levy proposition in the amount of $150,000 per year for three years, totaling $450,000. In February of last year, Ekalaka Elementary District #15 was selected for a $750,000 grant. The money, awarded by the Montana Department of Commerce Community Development Division, was granted "for the construction of a connecting wing between the elementary and high school buildings to secure the entrance and playground security," according to a letter from the governor's office that notified the school.
