  • JH girls work on fundamentals

    Jitt Schneider|Updated Nov 2, 2023

The girls have been working hard on the fundamentals — ball handling, passing, and dribbling towards the basket and defensive slides. Our positionless offense still needs some work as sometimes the ball is a hot potato, and the girls just want to get rid of it. We are working on taking a couple of seconds before we pass, dribble or shoot. Thanks to Coach Olsen, Coach Klauzer and Mrs. Amy Walker for volunteering to bring new drills, different perspectives and their willingness to help out wherever necessary. We played in B...

  • JH boys play in Broadus

    Christina Shepherd|Updated Nov 2, 2023

Mother nature was in great distress for our games last week, so therefore our Saturday game was canceled and the trip to Broadus was long and slow driving. Thankfully, with the help of some courageous drivers, we made it safely to and from Broadus on Friday. The Boys B Game was a close game the entire time, but the Bulldogs ended up with a win, 39-36! Cortland O’Connor had 26 points, 2 assists and 12 rebounds; Jenry Walker had 1 point and 1 assist; Grady Stieg had 7 points, 1 assist, 4 rebounds; Landry Shepherd had 5 p...

  • CAPITOLETTER

    Karen Odell|Updated Nov 2, 2023

Winter moved in at Capitol and Tie Creek, this week, with snow. Monday was a nice day for working outside. Tuesday was a day of rain, and Karen Odell had three-fourths of an inch, before the snow began, that evening, bringing four or five inches. Erma Albert was glad that she could go to her chiropractor appointment right in Buffalo, on Wednesday. By Friday, there was enough snow that the Senior Citizen Dinner was canceled for the week. They have scheduled the chicken dinner for next week, instead. Dick and Erma did go out to...

  • Conversations with God

    Updated Nov 2, 2023

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, it might be fun to go back in time (for a short time) when life moved at a slower pace. We’ll leave behind: high speed internet, cell phones, telephones, T.V., GPS and electricity. Back then daily chores were milking cows, gathering eggs, cleaning coop and barn, slopping pigs, feeding bucket calves, hoeing garden and plum trees, cooking meals from scratch, and in Autumn, making jams, jellies, canning fruits, vegetables and meat, making soap, making some of our clothes or remaking han...

  • Cooking in the West

    Susan Metcalf|Updated Nov 2, 2023

Parent teacher conferences are traditionally held after the first quarter of school ends, and I have to say they are one thing I didn’t really miss about teaching. Now, having returned to the classroom after 16 years off from parent teacher conferences, I find myself facing upcoming conferences with some trepidation. The parents of the good kids always show up, but the parents that you would really like to meet to give you insight into the reason their children are the way they are coincidentally don’t show up. My hat goe...

  • Replaced markers

    Updated Nov 2, 2023

Two hundred twenty-one severely deteriorated gravestones at Beaver Lodge Cemetery in Ekalaka were recently replaced. One of the main reasons for the project was to preserve local history before it was forever lost. The cemetery board raised some funding to offset the cost of the project. The August 11th Eagle reported that the initial plan included replacing 216 handmade markers. Donations to Beaver Lodge Cemetery may be mailed to Sue Breding, Secretary/Treasurer and...

  • Miles City Bucking Horse Sale inducted to MCHF

    Updated Nov 2, 2023

The World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale began as a way to sell some unwanted horses but soon evolved into a famous and iconic Western event. In 1950, salesyard owner, Les Boe, and his son-in-law, Bob Pauley, purchased steers from Harvey Lester of Ekalaka who threw some unbroken horses into the deal. Boe and Pauley found more horses and decided to hold a sale of bucking stock. Riders were paid $5 mount money to ride barebacks and $10 for saddle broncs. Paddy Ryan and Bob...

  • Montana Stockgrowers brings Montana raised beef to Miles City retailers

    Updated Nov 2, 2023

The Montana Stockgrowers Foundation (MSF) Cattle Drive program has set out to do something no other cattle organization in the state has done—match Montana born, raised, and fed cattle with local restaurants and retailers. The “Montanans Feeding Montana Initiative” seeks to connect the Montana food service industry to the high-quality beef raised by Montana ranchers. For the Miles City area, that means a local cattle producer’s animal has been paired with a local restaurant to offer a pasture to plate experience for consume...
