  • Fire blazes at Main Street business Monday

    A fire at Mainstreet Market caused significant damage to the Ekalaka building Monday. At around 5:50 a.m., Sheriff Neil Kittelmann was called because the back door of the business was open and there was graffiti painted on the exterior. Shortly after 6 a.m., it was discovered that a fire had burned inside the building sometime between Sunday night and early Monday morning. Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department was called.     Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department members held the drawing for their annual gun raffle fundraiser over the weekend at Dawg House Pub. Cindy Quade was this year’s lucky grand prize winner. She received a custom Howa .243 rifle. Mitch Olsen of Sidney won the second place prize, Vortex binoculars. Local Bill Kalstrom won the third prize, a wildlife print. I started the year by taking a city government course online through MSU in Bozeman and, recently, went to a budgeting workshop in Miles City. Both were very interesting and informative.     To light the celebration’s fuse, the Belltower Community Hall will be having a potluck on July 3. Beef, provided by the O’Connors, will be on the menu.     The town of Ekalaka has decided to ask the legal system to determine whether it or the Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department Corporation has ownership and control of the town's fire service and whether the fire department is part of the municipality, as the town claims, or is a separate corporation.     Last weekend Alzada Fire Department, Carter County Rural Fire, and Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Department handled three fires in Carter County. Late Monday night and early Tuesday morning a thunderstorm producing a great deal of lightning and little rain started several more fires. The largest of these fires, the Coffee Pot Fire, is estimated to have burned nearly 2,000 acres near the Powder River breaks.     For the second year in a row, Carter County Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Fourth of July Bash on Main Street in Ekalaka. Chamber members encouraged local businesses and residents to set up booths and carnival games for kids and adults alike.
