November 13, 2023 Tie Creek and Capitol are back to moderate fall weather. There were a few sprinkles of rain, and a windy day or two. Dick and Erma Albert had a good week. Erma was glad to go to the chiropractor, on Wednesday. She planned to have pies for Friday’s Senior Citizens’ Dinner, but needed some supplies, so on Thursday, she and Dick went shopping in Spearfish. She got the pies ready for Friday, in honor of Dick’s birthday. There were a few other Senior Citizens celebrating birthdays this week, so some other pies...

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, any day it’s great to ‘watch’ things, like clouds, trees, flowers, traffic, you name it, right? Can’t we just hear a group of kids using that word: “Let’s watch those clouds – they’re really moving fast.” Angie says, “Since we live in a valley, we like to watch the sun rise over the hills, or see the clouds coming up OR going down behind the hills, my favorite is to watch the Full Moon rising over the hills.” Deb adds, “We live on top of a hill, we get to watch those things also,...

It turned into an Indian summer week at Capitol and on Tie Creek. The week began with a little snow, but that has all melted into some mud. It is good weather to keep the dust down in the corrals, but some have found it difficult to get trucks in for shipping. Dick Albert had a doctor’s appointment in Spearfish, on Wednesday, and Erma got some shopping done while they were in town. The grocery prices have gone sky-high, with less and less produce in the bags and smaller and smaller candy bars. They went to the Senior C...

This weekend is Veteran’s Day, and while war rages in the Ukraine, Israel, and fifteen other countries around the world according to Wikipedia, we honor the veterans of all wars. The World War II veterans are becoming fewer in number every day, so we have little time left to honor and thank them for their sacrifices. I want to thank all veterans for their service and assure them that their sacrifices do not go unappreciated. There are so many poignant stories that have been shared by combat veterans of the horrors they e...

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know Lord, t’was fun listening to kids talk about numbers. Here’s a bit of what they said. D. J.: “My grandma’s having a hard time trying to remember her cell phone number, but when her phone rings, even in her old age, she’s smart enough to answer it.” Chuckles. Taylor said, “My Dad reminded us that we should remember our house number, P.O. Box number, our area code, probably what size shoe or shirt we wear as well as today’s date.” Sally laughed about that. Eddie added, “Uncle Dick loves play c...

Winter moved in at Capitol and Tie Creek, this week, with snow. Monday was a nice day for working outside. Tuesday was a day of rain, and Karen Odell had three-fourths of an inch, before the snow began, that evening, bringing four or five inches. Erma Albert was glad that she could go to her chiropractor appointment right in Buffalo, on Wednesday. By Friday, there was enough snow that the Senior Citizen Dinner was canceled for the week. They have scheduled the chicken dinner for next week, instead. Dick and Erma did go out to...

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know, Lord, it might be fun to go back in time (for a short time) when life moved at a slower pace. We’ll leave behind: high speed internet, cell phones, telephones, T.V., GPS and electricity. Back then daily chores were milking cows, gathering eggs, cleaning coop and barn, slopping pigs, feeding bucket calves, hoeing garden and plum trees, cooking meals from scratch, and in Autumn, making jams, jellies, canning fruits, vegetables and meat, making soap, making some of our clothes or remaking han...

Parent teacher conferences are traditionally held after the first quarter of school ends, and I have to say they are one thing I didn’t really miss about teaching. Now, having returned to the classroom after 16 years off from parent teacher conferences, I find myself facing upcoming conferences with some trepidation. The parents of the good kids always show up, but the parents that you would really like to meet to give you insight into the reason their children are the way they are coincidentally don’t show up. My hat goe...

Indian Summer descended upon Tie Creek and Capitol, this week. There was a day or two of breezy weather, but the days were mostly mild and sunny. Erma Albert had her last physical therapy appointment on Tuesday. She is now on her own. Keep up your exercises. On Thursday, Dick and Erma went to Spearfish for shopping. They stopped at Subway, and brought home supper that lasted a couple of days. They had meatballs, with mashed potatoes and gravy at the Senior Citizen dinner, on Friday. It was Norm Westers’s birthday, so there w...

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know Lord, when company visits, the kids love looking out the West window; amazed to see a Sunset, especially since they live ‘downtown’ and don’t often SEE Sunrise OR Sunset! They hollered, “Come QUICK – a golden hour up here is about to happen, ‘cause the Sun is about to set! Come; SEE the Sun, quick; it’s almost resting on the horizon! Come look!” There is a moment when the Sunlight shines on housetops in the neighborhood across the valley from us, and onto the hills to the West, like a ‘gol...

Since my faithful mare, Tinkerbelle, died, I have been looking for the perfect old lady’s horse. Actually I found him in Ekalaka, Montana, but I can’t wrap my head around the asking price. I have come to realize that the perfect bomb proof Grandma’s horse is going to cost me about a trailer load of calves, but I am struggling with writing a check that size for something that could die the next day. Several years ago, I realized that I no longer had any desire to hit the ground coming off a horse. After the cows were all w...

The rains that were predicted for Capitol and Tie Creek, didn’t produce much moisture this week. There has been fog, early on some days, so the moisture may come in January. Erma Albert went to physical therapy and to the chiropractor this week, so she is in great shape now. On Thursday, she and Dick went to Belle Fourche for some shopping, and Dick also got a haircut. They both went to the Senior Citizen dinner on Friday. On the way home, Erma stopped at the church to light a candle. They went back to the church on Sunday, f...

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know Lord, we all know we’re born to die, but when that happens to our family, friends or loved ones, sometimes it just takes us by surprise. Just heard that an elderly ‘Mom’ slipped away. Some families were near, others were not yet able to get there. We/they know that You, Lord, will come again, but not to deal with our sins. We also know that all that happens to us is working for our good if we love the Lord and are fitting into His plans. Later, friends chatted about how great ‘mom’ m...

The long awaited general season rifle hunting season starts this week. It has been an important weekend for me ever since I was born into my parents’ outfitting business, and I have spent many years as a hunting camp cook, so I have always revered hunting guides. I love to listen to hunters’ tales of how their guide darn near killed them off dragging them to the top of every mountain but how it was worth it in the end to shoot an elk on a wilderness hunt. However after all those years of observation, I have come to the con...

Erma Albert saved some of her outside plants from freezing, this week. Her petunias were out, but the cold nights just made them more beautiful. On Tuesday, Erma went to physical therapy in Buffalo. She and Dick went to eye appointments in the Hills on Thursday. Luckily, their eyes had not changed much, and they could keep their old glasses. They went to the Senior Citizen Dinner on Friday, and Erma stayed in the afternoon to play cards. Catholic Mass was on Saturday night, this week, and Dick and Erma stayed home to watch...

As I come to the realization that I am playing in the fourth quarter, my perspective on life has become more retrospective. I am rather baffled by the speed at which I arrived in the fourth quarter, and I am determined not to sit it out on the bench. In fact, as a person who spent many years in the adventure vacation business, I loved the movie, The Bucket List. It was an inspiration to many of our older guests to get out of the recliner, climb mountains, ride horses, shoot elk, or go trout fishing, and we were happy that...

Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know Lord, it seems like it’s best to do A GOOD DEED, right? Three gals were busy gabbing as they cleaned up a kitchen and dining room. ‘Gayle’ was busy chatting when several kids from the other room popped in. “We heard you talking about doing good deeds,” Jenny said. “We remember last year when Mrs. K. was our Sunday School teacher. If some of us were fussing, she’d say – ‘SHH. Do you not – ‘know that you are fearfully and wonderfully made’? Maybe made to do a good deed? That’s from Psalm 1...

Ekalaka Public Schools Board of Trustees has moved to run a bond election for staff housing. As part of the strategic plan made by the board, staff and community over the last year, one main goal is to offer staff housing for recruitment and retention of staff members of the district. Nearby towns such as Baker, Plevna and Broadus offer housing to their staffs therefore the district feels this is essential to draw employees to our community. The bond election will run in both...

Their new grandson-in-law is from Hawaii, so it will be a great place for a wedding. Erma went to physical therapy in Buffalo, on Tuesday. Hello God, it’s me, Mara: You know Lord, a couple cousins shared what their girls were looking for in boyfriends to make the boys super husbands. The cousins got a kick out of listening to that chatter - sensing that their girls had noticed several neighbors, some as super families, some just so-so. The cousins giggled, wondering if maybe they, as moms, should make a list to give to YOUNG mothers to encourage their little boys. C.Z. and M.C. took a look at their own husbands, making some comments. C.Z. mentioned: “My hubby’s...

“Is your mom ok?” our Crazy Peak Boutique employee, Larissa, asked my daughter, Brooke, last Wednesday morning. “Define ok,” Brooke replied. In her defense, Brooke has lived almost 38 years of her life realizing that her mom is not exactly normal. “Why do you ask?” Brooke laughed. “Well, customers are asking about her and some incident that happened at the Family Dollar, and I am not sure how to answer. She was gone yesterday, so I don’t know if something happened to her,” Larissa continued. “Oh, she is fine, but that’s a...

With gas and diesel prices through the roof and inflation hitting our wallets month after month, there are many people who are having to get creative about providing food and shelter for their families. Urban camping is now a thing in places like Bozeman, Montana not just Seattle or Portland, and many families are resorting to multi-generational cohabitation. In fact, I have a whole lot more respect for the television family of the Waltons after living with three generations under one roof. I remember watching the Waltons...
