The 56th Annual Western 4-H Family and Consumer Science Show will be held October 12 and 13 at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City, South Dakota. Lu Strangford was born and raised on the family ranch at Mill Iron along with her brother Bud. Her parents were Leslie and Louise Strangford. Strangford's first job was herding sheep for her uncle, Vernon Knipfer, while he attended school in Ekalaka. She earned $5 a day. She also helped herd cattle and sheep from Mill Iron to the CY at Camp Crook, South Dakota for them. My hometown had some 8,000 residents, situated midway between Kansas City and St. Louis, on the Missouri River. James A. Michener mentioned the town without using its name in the book “Centennial.” By Missouri standards, we were a small town. The Carter County Chamber of Commerce has big plans this summer, as was discussed at the monthly chamber meeting in May. The first chamber sponsored event on tap this summer is the annual community wide yard sale, scheduled for the first Saturday in June. A sign-up sheet has been posted at Ekalaka Town Office. For a small fee of $10, anyone in the community may sign up to have their yard sale location printed on a map. Attendance numbers have been dropping at Carter County Chamber of Commerce meetings for several months. Board members have struggled to accomplish goals that were set at the beginning of the year. Currently, there are around sixty-five chamber members. This list includes several businesses throughout the county, as well as area ranchers and individuals. The September Carter County Chamber of Commerce meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m. As usual, the meeting will be held at Wagon Wheel Café. Warren O. White, 83, of Roseville, Ohio, formerly of Ekalaka, passed away, March 4, 2017 at Fairhope Hospice & Palliative Care - The Pickering House in Lancaster, Ohio following a lingering illness.
